Conferences are ideal platforms for the testing of new ideas, the making of a consortium of interested parties around a new research idea, project identification, etc. To make optimal profit of the conference, the fast en widely availability of the outcomes and publications of the conference is key prerequisite.
The new development in publishing, ‘open access’ has as main advantage that many more people, especially in developing countries, have access to our research (ideas and results) and that making ideas and results public goes much faster. We all remember conference proceedings or special issues that take years to finalize and are therefore outdated the moment they reach the public.
Given the above considerations, we have decided that all information from the AgroEnviron 2012 will be published in a special open access conference journal in the Wageningen UR Open Journal System. This will include first of all the abstracts, followed by full texts of the keynotes, all presentations, and the short, reviewed papers and posters (full!) presented at the conference.
All abstracts, papers and posters will be available on-line as from the start of the conference. They will remain available for a minimal period of 5 years following the conference. Full text documents will be indexed, so that they will be easily found by search engines. Inclusion of your contribution, either in full text or as a link to the OJS journal in your own institutional repository (important for your tenure track)or on your personal website is not restricted and highly recommended.
Due to the online character and the availability of free Wi-Fi during the conference, scientists can use their mobile technology to access the information during the conference; the programme will be linked to the relevant sections in the journal. This environmentally friendly system, reduces the amount of paper used during the conference considerably.
The online journal will provide immediate open access to its full content on the principle that making research freely available to fellow researchers and to the public, supports a greater global exchange of knowledge. A creative common (by-nc-nd) license will be implemented. This license implies that others may copy and use your material under the conditions that the work is properly cited, not used for commercial purposes and not altered.
